Nichol Shard waited by the road, on top of a tree. He was told to go escort a Lillian Toral to the Hold, while Kairi Thorne was doing a quick errand. He wasn't entirely sure why he was chosen to do this. Since he was both new to the place and his age was young. Certainly the youngest that pulls his weight with the military. Even if he didn't have an official rank. He didn't boss people around, and did help guide people to the base here and there. He'd learned the surrounding area well enough. Not enough to be the go to person, but he was getting there. He'd asked about shadowing Shran tomorrow. And hopefully learn a few things from him.

The boy had brown trousers and cloak that hid his shirtless torso. It was still fairly temperate here, so it didn't bother him at all. On his back was a quiver of arrows, his short bow within easy reach. His short sword was hidden at his hip, and his goggles were on top of his head like normal. Also at his hip were various pouches of crystals.

The pale blond saw the woman. A mechanical arm, crossbow, sword, brown hair, fairly well dressed, if practical for combat should the need arise.

Once she was in range, he spoke in a quiet voice, but hopefully loud enough for her to hear. "Lillian Toral?" If it was her, he'd jump down. "Nichol Shard. I was asked to escort you to the Hold. And entertain you until Kairi Thorne comes back from her quick errand." He assumed that meant showing her around. Which he would do. He also sounded almost expressionless and monotone. Even his dead, dark blue eyes seemed a little out of place.

Lilian had decided to ditch her light armor, stowing it in her bags, and wear a black tunic and gray pants, with brown leather boots. White armor was... not meant for travelling in. Atleast if she fell in a mud puddle, again, it wouldn't be as noticable. Lilian's mind was wondering as she walked along the road, and she didn't spot the boy waving at her. She jumped a mile in the air when he made himself loud enough to hear. She had her short sword drawn before she realised who was talking to her, ready to activate the enchantment that would skewer them.

However when she realised he'd mentioned her name she hesitated, and when she seen he was only a young boy maybe around the same age as Lucus she lowered her sword. "Jeez kiddo give a girl a heart attack why don't you." She said to him sheathing the shortsword. She watched him drop from the tree and introduce himself, explaining that Kairi had asked him to meet her on the road. That was nice of her. Lilian looked the boy up and down, noticed the bow and sword, and smiled. "Well its nice to meet you Nicol, even if you did scare me half to death." She offered her hand for him to shake. "How old are you? I have a brother around your age. Are your parents soldiers of the sunhold?" She asked him, following if he started to walk.

It seemed he scared her as she drew her sword. But soon relaxed and confirmed his suspicions. She took in his appearance, said the pleasantries, and asked a couple of questions. He started to walk, and answer them. Though again, he was quiet and monotone. "Fifteen years old. One parent is dead, the other...I don't know, but if my half-brother is any indication, I wouldn't want to meet him anyways. My half-brother is a soldier here. I help out when I can. I mostly explore and guide people to the Sunhold."

And Arthur was gracious enough to let Nichol stay with him. Though he kept his surname Shard. It became fairly common knowledge around the place that the two were related. And he was learning more and more about the surrounding areas by the day. Though he'd like to go out further.

The walk wasn't terribly long. He was only about an hour and forty-five minutes away from the place, but the road was a winding one through the forest. Even if it wasn't dense. Still, unless she asked questions, he'd be pretty quiet.

Returning Help Empty Re: Returning Help

Post by Zenke on Wed May 01, 2019 5:33 am

Lilian walked and listened to him quietly explain his situation to her. He was the same age as Lucus, though he seemed a bit smaller than the average fifteen year old. She didn't comment that, but he mentioned his parents and she felt pity, but also understanding. "I'm sorry. I lost my mother too, in the contact war." She said. She understood what it was like without your mother around. Fortunately her father was one of the best men she knew, and she had a bit more family than this poor kid. Atleast he had somebody to look after him.

It was probably tough growing up with an absent father, who by the sounds of it had cheated on the kid's mother. It annoyed her to know end to see people have children and refuse to take responsability. Maybe he was better of not meeting his father, but if she were him she'd make the man pay for every bit of suffering he'd caused. "Where are you from? what about your half-brother? I'm from Mondolin, obviously. I grew up in Mith Silvanus." She said.

She looked him over again, noticed the goggles. "Well they look interesting. Is that rune work I see on the rim? I'm a bit of an enchanter, when my knightly duties allow for something else to do." She said to him, hoping to get a bit of interest out of the kid. He seemed nice, but quiet and shy and she couldn't help see a bit of Lucus in the kid.

He shrugged. Nichol wondered why that was one of the first things people did, apologize. It seemed super odd to him. He did give her a quizzical look about a contact war of sorts. Still, he answered her resulting questions. "Crystal Isles. A two island chain if you consider the first island an island and not a fort. My half-brother is also from Mondolin. His name is Artorias Ferrum Aurora."

And the man was popular with the soldiers. And people in general. He was...trying to learn...but dealing with people just wasn't his forte. She then mentioned his goggles. His eyes actually showed some emotion, narrowing at her in suspicion. But took them off and handed them to her. "They were expensive. They have three vision modes. Eagle Eye, Night Vision, and Heat Vision. The daughter of one of the minors my mother sacrificed herself for made them. They would have cost me more if it weren't for that." Little favors.

Although...enchanting work. Holding out his hand, crystals of all sizes from his pouches flew out to form a small buckler. After a few seconds, he put them back into their respective pouches. A diamond tattoo on his forehead glowed while it happened. But it was more a statement than anything. "I've been reading about magic...is that how this was made?" He tapped lightly on the metal arm. He was still every bit monotone and soft spoken, and maybe even a bit awkward.

Post by Zenke on Mon May 06, 2019 2:32 am

When he mentioned the Crystal Isles, she took a moment to think about it. She'd read something about the crystal isles in her fathers notebooks, but couldn't recall exactly what. "I think my father might have been there. I remember reading about the Isles in his notebooks. This is my first time outside of mondolin though, so my knowledge is limited in regards to various locations." She explained. She did recognize the Aurora name however.

"I know that Aurora is a noble name. I've never met any of them though." She said. Though he looked skeptical, he handed her the goggles and she took them, examining them with facination. "Three enchantments? That's Impressive. I can only manage one on a single item. Last time I tried adding a second it melted. I do know most individual items can only hold three enchantments. To many enchantments causes confusion between the different runes, resulting in a very large boom." She said. She handed the goggles back to him. She'd have to convince him to let her borrow and study them further.

She watched him manipulate crystals, a grin spreading across her face. "Very interesting." She said, and generated a small metal star. She threw it and it hit a tree, before slowly disintegrating. "I can also do some nifty stuff with lightning that's probably a bit to dangerous to show off right now." She said.

He mentioned he'd been reading about magic and asked if that was how her arm had been made. "Magic and metal working. My father had started the designs years ago, but it was just for prostetics. My brother and I redesigned it and I enchanted it. It's a complex enchantment that simulates what happens when your brain sends messages to your body. I can feel it move, though I can't actually feel anything with it yet. I think I might be able to manage that one day, if I can figure out how to send messages back to the brain.." She spoke fast, enthusiastically and then stopped herself. "Sorry, I'm very enthusiastic about enchantments." She said.

Oh? "If you go there, feel free to swing by and take me with you. You'll find no one that knows the Crystal Badlands and the Magma Fields better than me. I will charge you though." That's how he made enough money for the goggles.

His brother's name sounded familiar to her. Nichol nodded in response. That was what his brother had said. She commented on his goggles, giving them back. "Crystal Isle is home to artisans of most kinds. Primarily jewelry and metal working." Magic users were rare, but there were some dotted across the lands. Crystal Isle just happened to have two people running a shop together.

Lilian did her own magical demonstration, forming metal to throw. She had some other abilities, but he didn't inquire specifics. Her father was some sort of blacksmith it seemed, but it was her and her brother who improved on the design. It was interesting to hear. He wasn't a blacksmith, didn't have the strength for it. But she was also enthusiastic about the subject.

"We all have our passions." He waved away her apologies. He could never be that talkative. He was very quiet already, often hard to hear.

Lilian nodded agreeably. "Sure that would be fun. I'll put it on my list of places to visit when I get my next leave. Likewise, if you ever decide to go to mondolin. I don't get out of my country often, but I'm familiar with both Mith Silvanus and Mith Verdanus. And if you decide to confront your father ever, bring me along. A knight present will keep him in check. Noble or not." She said.

After a bit more talking thing's quieted down a bit between them. However the silence was pleasent and short lived as she caught sight of the hold ahead. Part fortress part town, the Sunshield Hold was a testament to all that was good in the world. It was pretty obvious who the patron goddess was, though she did wonder why no organisation had risen up in the name of Na'Kora. Though maybe that had more to do with heanta and their dislike of sharing.

Just seeing the hold got her all excited and full of energy, and she was practically chomping at the bit to sprint off and start exploring the place. But she held herself reserved and stuck with Nichol. The soldiers at the gate watched them approach, and eyed her warily. She let Nichol handle them, and flashed them the crest of the knights of Mondolin just to help along proceedings. She was expected by Kairi after all. After the guards let them pass, she turned to Kairi. "So while we wait for Kairi, what's there to see around here?"

He had no plans to meet him now. Maybe his half-sisters, assuming Arthur let them know he was here. Then they were in silence. Though that was short lived when they caught a glimpse of the fortress and town. He almost took a step away from Lilian when she seemed like she had a bunch of energy, just ready to bound away. He hoped she wasn't always this hyper.

He showed the guards the copy of his orders, along with Kiari's seal. That let them through pretty quickly and easily. The woman then asked if there was anything to see around here. "Plenty. Look, there's a house there. A blacksmith there. And lots of people. But first, to get you set up with a place to stay." Was he a little sarcastic? Yes. Was he still as monotone as before? Yes. This was a question that always annoyed him. He still might get in trouble for that though...not like he'd care much.

He first showed her where she was to stay, all according to Kairi's orders. Then he'd show her the temple.

Lilian looked at the kid as he replied sarcastically. "Wow I've never seen so many interesting things." She said in reply. Atleast he had some sort of sense of humor, but his voice was still monotone. When he said he was showing her to where she was staying she nodded. He showed her to a guest room in the fort, not far from Kairi's own room. Lilian left her belongings and followed the kid back out to the temple.

She of course expected the temple to Na'Sora, but it was actually far grander than the size of the settlement would have led her to believe. She wondered when Kairi would be back. She'd been traveling for a few hours, but honestly she was all pent up since her stay in Zadartis. She wanted to get into the training ring and have a good spar with somebody, or kick some bandits in the face, or even teach some of the soldiers to use crossbows like Kairi wanted.

Returning Help Empty Re: Returning Help

Post by Orgoth on Wed May 22, 2019 10:32 am

A white horse trotted briskly across the plain, its rider's white cloak billowing out behind her. The rider smiled as she spotted the fortress growing larger in the distance. Sunshield Hold was a place of hope and safety for many, but for Kairi Thorne, it was also home. She was running an errand in southern Mondolin for Randalla Thorne, her adopted mother, when she received a message that Lilian Toral was on her way to the Hold. Lilian was a friend of Kairi's for a few years now, though they hadn't seen much of each other until a chance encounter in Mith Verdanus recently, where they caught up and made plans to visit Kairi.

Kairi had to finish her errand, but she sent a message back to have someone meet Lilian and escort her to the Hold to rest until Kairi returned. She was almost there now, just hoping that she hadn't kept her friend waiting too long. Kairi offered a wave to the guards at the main gate, who bowed politely in response. "Welcome back, Miss Thorne." The stables were her first stop, and she carefully dismounted and led her steed into the enclosure and through to the barn. The horse was Randalla's, a mare named Lily, and she gratefully entered the barn and made her way to the water trough. Kairi gave the horse a quick scratch behind the ears before leaving.

Kairi made her way to the main keep, dropping in her report of her mission. She asked the guards at the gate if there had been any sign of Lilian. "Yes ma'am. Young Shard traveled out to meet her. They got back just a short time ago." Kairi nodded and smiled. "Ah. Thank you." The guard bowed and Kairi then turned to the issue of finding out where Lilian and her escort might've gone. Young Nichol was a recent addition to the the Order, having arrived only weeks ago. He was the long-lost half-brother to Arthur, one of Kairi's former trainees. Given his fascination with religious symbolism, one of the few traits Kairi had managed to learn about him, she took a gamble and decided that the young man might have shown Lilian the temple first.

Upon arriving, Kairi blessed herself with a small incantation as the temple came into view. She was not especially religious herself, but the intricacies of how faith affects life always gave her something to think about. She reached the building and spotted a pair of familiar heads standing nearby. Grinning broadly, Kairi approached the two and bowed politely. "Feeling pious?" Kairi looked at Nichol and beamed with gratitude. "Nichol, it's always good to see you. Thank you for meeting Lilian for me." She looked around. "I hope I didn't keep you waiting too long?"

She seemed to have taken his sarcastic reply in stride. While she seemed to like the temple, she seemed...anxious? Pent up for something...action. Before he could ask, Kairi Thorne came up to them. Good, she made it back alright. He returned the bow, but stayed quiet. Even nodding in acknowledgement. He still seemed a bit awkward, not knowing if he was dismissed or not. The blond shook his head to answer her question. They really were only there for a couple minutes before she came along. Still, he kind of shuffled away a little bit. And a little bit more. Unless he was called upon, he wasn't going to stick around for too much longer. He had things to do. Wildlife to study, the geography to look at, to explore. To find every little nick and cranny of the surrounding area.

Lilian looked at the temple and realised she was standing outside awkwardly. She made to move inside, figuring Nichol would follow when she heard Kairi speak. She turned and and smiled. "I'd call it curiosity more so. We didn't know what to do while we waited other than drop my stuff off." Lilian said. Kairi thanked Nichol for going to get Lilian. "Not to long, we only got in maybe fifteen minutes ago. I was kind of expecting you to be gone all day. Glad your not though." Lilian said. She smiled. "I had a time getting here. I met a few colorful characters on the way. one of them being Fayla Shor herself." Lilian said.

She had really enjoyed that encounter. She would definitely be stopping in Zendar on the way home to meet Vala and Fayla. "I also met Rex." She said, scowling. "Won't say anything rude infront of Nichol, but next time I see him i'm going to smack his smug face." She hadn't decided which hand she was going to use either. As much as she disliked asentari, Fayla was freinds with Rex and if she was, then he couldn't be all bad. "I'm a little pent up. Lets go do something exciting." She said. But then she smiled. "After you get a rest of course."

Lilian reported on her journey to Kairi with a smile, noting the people she had met on the way, including a certain young Eldari. Kairi chuckled at the mention of Fayla's name. "Oh, you met Miss Shor? Let me guess. She wanted to fight you when she saw your arm?" Kairi then noticed Nichol becoming a little uneasy and beginning to sidle away slowly. "Oh, please forgive my rudeness, Nichol. I didn't mean to leave you standing there like that." Lilian mentioned meeting Rex, and also that she was feeling a little pent up, which gave Kairi an idea.

"I know. Nichol, why don't you go get something to eat? Myself and Lilian are just going to catch up for a while, but if you want you can come down to the training ring in about an hour, we could have a little dust-up and see how your training has been going. Sound good?"

Assuming Nichol responded and excused himself, Kairi then turned to Lilian again and smiled warmly. "So you met Rex, huh? I ask you not to judge him too harshly. I know you're still not comfortable with Asentari, and Rex can come off as a little cocky, but he's a good kid, and an excellent fighter." Kairi gestured for Lilian to walk with her. "I'll show you around a bit first, if you'd like. There's a class using the training area at the moment, but they should be done soon. How much of the Hold did you get to see with Nichol?"

Lilian waved goodbye to Nichol. "See you later kiddo." She said. When he was gone she turned back to Kairi. "Actually, no. We shared a room, and the next day she took me to a tournament where we fought a bounch of strong dudes and ladies. We both made it to the finals but in the end I lost. She's a way better fighter than me. I did keep her on her toes with my powers but that was only so effective. Anyway yeah she's got me all riled up and I'm going to get to meet Vala on my way home and I want to impress them both you know because they're the grand children of legends and all that." Lilian took a deep breath, as she'd been talking so fast she started to run out of air.

She let out a sigh when kairi mentioned Rex. This time she was more hesitent to answer. "Yeah.. He seems nice enough, even a little handsome. But he also lied to me. Granted it became clear quickly I'm not fond of asentari, so maybe he was right to not tell me. Though its not like I'd lock him up in the silver citadel and send bits of him back to Edia in little decorative boxes. Um.. Anyway, I don't know. I might never see him again anyway so perhaps it won't matter that he lied." She said. Kairi mentioned the training ring and asked her how much of the hold had nichol showed her.

"Sure I'd like to get my muscles moving. I've been walking all morning but that's hardly action." She said. "If you've got enchantment work I think I'll take a break later today, so just point me at the thing you want to do magical stuff and I'll make it happen." She said. "Oh he just showed me to me room and the temple. We'd basically only arrived outside it when you appeared."

Kairi listened and smiled when Lilian launched into a very fast monologue about her time in Zadartis with Fayla. Kairi chuckled as the young girl tried to catch her breath afterwards. "Relax, young one. We have a bit of time." Kairi put a hand on Lilian's shoulder, a hand that was devoid of trembling for once. "Well, I'm glad to see you haven't let that loss dissuade you. Fayla and Vala have both been doing this since before you were born, after all. You will get there. I am sure of it."

The conversation then turned to Lilian's encounters with Rex. Lilian had taken umbrage with the young man, not just fro being an Asentari, but for apparently lying about it as well. Kairi raised an eyebrow with interest. "Did he actually tell you he wasn't an Asentari? Or did he simply neglect to mention it?" They walked inside the temple and entered the main chamber. The room was relatively empty, save for a couple of clerics talking at the back of the room. Kairi looked around fro a moment before continuing.

"This is meant with all due respect, and I know you did not come here to hear me preach about co-operation, but you are a little transparent when it comes to Asentari. Knowing Rex as I do, I can tell you that he is young and simply craves approval from his peers. By not telling you immediately about his heritage, he most likely wanted you to judge him on his character rather than his race. Even if you never cross paths again, you should try and keep this in mind." Kairi gestured to the great symbol of Na'Sora above the altar. "I am not as devout as I should be, perhaps. But I do appreciate the message that the Order believes in. We are all stronger together."

Lilian mentioned how far she had gotten on her tour and her offer to enchant some things while she was there, and Kairi nodded. "I will introduce you to the quartermaster later on. I'm sure you two will have much to discuss." Kairi gestured for Lilian to continue walking with her. "I promised I would try and return the favor when you showed me the view from the top of the tower in Mith Verdanus. Our tower isn't quite so grand, but I'm sure you'll like it." Kairi began leading Lilian to the north watchtower.

Returning Help Empty Re: Returning Help

Post by Zenke on Tue Jul 09, 2019 9:27 am

Kairi patted Lilian's shoulder causing the girl to smile as she reasured her that there was plenty of time. She praised Lilian's fighting spirit. "It was more fun than anything. I thought it would be strange to share a room with a living legend, but she's just a regular girl." Lilian listened to Kairi and gave her a sulky frown. She almost wanted to snap at Kairi for not understanding, but then she knew it wouldn't be fair. Kairi was human but she wasn't a mondolin citizen, or warrior. She was a soldier of the Order of the Sun, who's mission was to uphold peace not fight wars. Her view of the asentari would always be vastly different to Lilian's.

Still she felt the need to defend herself. "Its hard not to be transparent. I know its not fair, but I can't help blaming asentari for my mother's death. I know Rex isn't to blame, he's to young to have been fighting, but I still feel betrayed. Even if he didn't specifically lie to me. I kind of liked him though, he's cute, but this changes things. That makes me sad, because I don't think I want it to..." Lilian shook her head.
"Sorry, don't pay attention to me. Lets go see this tower." She said. She followed Kairi up the spiral stairs into the tower. "You say that, but since this is my first time seeing the view I'll probably enjoy it just as much as you enjoyed the view from Verdanus keep." Lilian said.

Kairi nodded understandingly. "That is true. I was also a little surprised when I met her, but I soon learned that she prefers it that way. To be treated like everyone else. I can respect that." Kairi offered a warm and sympathetic look when Lilian began to sulk at Kairi's comment on Rex's perceived deception. The young girl was almost wistful in her defense of herself. Kairi could understand her frustration. Perspective was a powerful thing, and Kairi's own perspective was obviously vastly different to Lilian's, and understandably so. "I am sorry. I did not mean to upset you. We can stop talking about it if you like."

Lilian commented that she would enjoy the view from the top of the tower by virtue of never having seen it before. Kairi turned and smiled. "I hope so." They reached the top of the stairs and Kairi led Lilian out onto a balcony that looped around the entire tower. Kairi gestured out to the lush green lands to the west. "That is the Eldari realm of Endaron. I have been as far as Gateway Harbour before, but I have never had the privilege of crossing the sea to Sindaron." She then gestured to the north and north-east. "Mondolin. The great Human kingdom." Kairi pointed at a point of light on the horizon to the north-east. "You can see Mith Silvanus on a day like today." Kairi stopped short of showing Lilian the south and south-east, though if asked she would identify the devastated realm of Harodiel. "What do you think?"

Lilian took in the view and smiled as Kairi pointed out the various different locations. She'd never been close to the Eldari border in Mondolin, so it was quite a sight indeed. When Kairi pointed out that you could see Mith Silvanus on a bright day, Lilian let out a light laugh. Kairi asked her what she thought of the view and Lilian grinned. "I think I may have taken the most convoluted route in existance to get here. Mith Silvanus must be two or three days travel from here and I took a week." She said and laughed. "But the view is lovely."

She also took the time to examine the layout of the fort from up high. It certainly wasn't as impressive as Mith Silvanus' mighty fortress or the fort in Mith Verdanus, but it was well built and defensible. After a few minutes of admiring the view she looked questioningly at Kairi. "Where too now? We're supposed to meet Nichol in the training ring soon right?" She asked Kairi.

Kairi smiled when Lilian mentioned the route she took to get here. "Well, at least you got to experience more that way. You met the granddaughter of Dalrodir Shor, for one." Kairi let the young woman take in the sights for a moment. Sunshield Hold spread out below them, and though it was not anywhere near the size of Mith Verdanus, there was a certain sturdy charm to it, a certain simplicity. Lilian then questioned their next move. "That is true. Young Nichol is progressing well with his training, though he still has a lot to learn. Maybe a lesson from a Knight of Mondolin will help him a lot."

Kairi led the way down through the castle and towards the training ring. Kairi glanced at Lilian. "The ring looks free. That's good. Do you want to get anything from your room before we go?" If so, they went and got it. If not, they continued on. Either way, they entered the ring and Kairi looked around. "I wonder where he is."

Returning Help Empty Re: Returning Help

The training ring itself was too flat, too barren, and all around too disadvantages for him. Nichol waited on top of a nearby building, already armed with a four pound training short sword and training arrows that emit white chalk when they hit something. Still, he wasn't so far away that he couldn't hear Commander Thorne.

Taking out a training arrow, he aimed at the base of Lillian's neck, and fired. He was up and a little bit behind her. Still, he was standing on the ledge, as comfortable as ever. "Most areas of combat aren't as dull and boring as a training ring. So why do we use it again?" Soft spoken and monotone, the answer always befuddled him. It was so...unrealistic. Still, he'd wait after that, just to see if they were allowed a bit more freedom to move.

Lilian nodded. "I can teach him a few tricks suited to fighting larger, stronger opponents." She said and followed Kairi from the tower. She returned to her room to grab her crossbow, and then to the ring which was free. She stopped at the door to replace the bolts in her cartridges with training bolts, and then joined Kairi who wondered where Nichol had gotten to. "We might be early. I'm sure-" She heard something from behind and spun. An arrow hit her shoulder. She already had her crossbow aimed at her attacker, and loosed a bolt back.

Then she realised she'd only been hit with a training arrow, and was thankful she'd taken the time to switch out her own arrows as she seen Nichol on the roof of the building. "Ah, found him." She said and grinned at his question. "Soldiers can't go stomping off into the wilderness for every sparring bout." She explained. "Not only do you leave yourself open to be spied on or ambushed by enemies, it reduces the response time if there's a sudden attack on the town your supposed to be protecting."

She nodded towards to the ring. "Its safer too. closer to the Medic quarters incase of an accident, or intentional injury. But that being said, it is common practice in mondolin to preform field training exorcises, including border patrols. They're valuable experiences, but dangerous. I lost several friends during one when a heanta strayed over the border. I barely survived, myself." She looked at Kairi. "I doubt it's as dangerous down here, but I'll leave it up to you to decide if we're going to take the training out into the forest."

Returning Help Empty Re: Returning Help

Post by Orgoth on Sat Jul 27, 2019 9:06 am

Kairi turned just in time to see a bolt hit Lilian in the shoulder. The girl loosed one back in the direction it came from, and Kairi glanced over to see Nichol perched on a ledge. "There you are, Nichol." The kid questioned the value of training in a flat and plain arena, rather than training out in the field. Kairi nodded at Lilian's answer and smiled at the young boy's naivety. It was a question she found herself fielding a lot from the young recruits, and her reasoning was the same every time.

"It's simple really. We train here in order to hone the basic skills we need to fight out in the field. You are correct that most combat encounters do not take place in a level training ring. However, no one knows exactly what they will face out there, so most of the techniques we teach here designed to be easily adapted for most situations and environments. You won't always have the luxury of space and elevation, so what you learn here will aid you in dealing with the unexpected. Provided you train hard enough, of course."

Lilian offered the choice of location to Kairi, and she stroked her chin. "I have an idea. A challenge, if you two are up for it. I was going to use here..." She winked at Nichol and smiled. "But I suppose we could move out into the field to make it a bit more interesting. Alright, arm yourselves with what ever training equipment you wish and follow me" Kairi picked up a heater shield and a training spear and waited for the two to ready up, before heading towards the front gate.

Kairi brought them out onto the steppe just west of the Hold. A stream from the river Ceballos ran through the grassland, with a small ledge overlooking it from both sides. Kairi turned to both of her companions. "Alright. Time to see what you both can do. Sometimes the strength of one is not enough, and you will be forced to work with others you may not know. Your aim here is to land three hits on me. You are both individually talented, I'm no slouch either, so you will have to work together. If you succeed, dinner is on me tonight." Kairi's eyes narrowed and she lowered herself into a combat stance. "So, what say you?"

He turned to the side to avoid the arrow. So, he would have injured her shoulder. A far better place to be hit than his original aim. "Try surviving in the Crystal Badlands and Magma Fields...you tend to learn real quick or die." How many of his clients didn't listen to him and end up dead by the beasts that live there? Though he did suppose the medical answer was the best one.

Still, he made no emotion to the answers given. And hopped/climbed down with ease. He picked up the training arrow. He was literally already set and ready to go. Kairi told them the deal, and got in a combat stance. Three hits.

Shrugging, he looked around. Of course, they were on the top part of the steppe. Overlooking the river. Joy. He looked over at Lillian. Physical strength wasn't him, so he had no idea what his commander talked about. But he would follow her friend's lead.

Returning Help Empty Re: Returning Help

Lilian didn't protest when Kairi decided to take them out into the field. She was actually excited to be moving. When they arrived, Kairi told them the situation and then took a combat stance. Lilian looked over at Nicol with a frown. She wasn't sure about the kid, he didn't seem like a team player. Still, Lilian was experienced enough that she should be able to work with him, even if he had trouble working with her.

Lilian quickly examined her surroundings, noting rocks and obstacles and of course the sheer drop into the river below. That cliff would probably be vital if they were to defeat Kairi. With her surroundings processed she regarded Kairi carefully, her finger on the trigger of her crossbow. A direct assault from the front would fail, so Lilian began to edge sideways away from Nicol, hoping he would get the picture and move the opposite direction, to better pincer Kairi between them. She wouldn't be able to block a ranged assualt from both directions.

Then Lilian opened fire, using her rapid fire enchantment to pepper Kairi with chalk training bolts. She followed the assualt up by running almost directly for Kairi, but instead of attacking her directly, Lilian would jump from the cliff, spinning around in the air to fire her shockling hook past Kairi, and using it to reel herself in, aiming a blow to the head with the butt of her crossbow.
